Discovery Visit of the old Town

In the city centre of Obernai the Regency and Louis XVth styles combine harmoniously with a beautifully restored medieval and Renaissance group of buildings also left with the architectural influences of the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries.

The Kappellturm Belfry

Being 59,60 metres high (behind the town hall), it is the last vestige of the Chapel of the Virgin built at the end of the XIIIth century and destroyed in 1873. The Kappellturm Belfry served as the city watchttower.

The City Hall

Its construction started as early as 1370, but subsequently the building was enlarged and several times transformed. On the first storey, the former Hall of Justice was decorated in 1609-1610 with panellings and mural paintings illustrating the 10 Commandments.

The Fountain Ste-Odile

Dating back to 1904, the fountain represents Ste-Odile, the "Patron Saint of Alsace" with the abbess's crook and an open book in her hand.

The Romanesque House

Built towards 1220, this former "Cour Dîmière", a tithe Court, in the rue de la Dîme, has been rearranged in the Renaissance style.

Judaism in Obernai

In Obernai there are still vestiges to be seen in the ruelle des Juifs. In the inner court of number 43 of the rue du Général Gouraud, an archway with keystone bears a double jewish and Christian date. There alsao elements of rocaille style. The presents day synagogue built in the last century is a beautiful model of neo-Romanesque style.

The well of the six buckets

This is a magnificent Renaissance well. Three graceful columns in Corynthian style support a canopy with biblical inscriptions of the New Testament.

Church St Peter and Paul

Built on the site of a former Roman church demolished in 1867, the Church St Peter and Paul of neogothic style is the greatest sanctuary in Alsace after Strasbourg Cathedral. Its choir is decorated with rich paintings by Martin Feuerstein (1856-1931) and panelling by the Colmar artist Théophile Klem (1849-1923).

The Corn Exchange

Built in 1554, it was used successively as a large public butcher house, a corn exchange and a museum. Its turret bell used to herald the opening and closing time of the weekly market.

The Ramparts

They surround the city. Initially 52 towers and gates protected the City, nowadays only 30 of them remain. The broad circular path or former ramparts between the two precints is used today as a place for promenade.

The Fastinger Courtyard

At the end of the XVIth century this house belonged to the burgomaster mayor - a butcher, Michel Gyss. A shop sign can be seen above the well.
